Trooper Dave Mai
Dave Mai

David Martin Mai was born June 10, 1952 in WaKeeney, Kansas to Clarence and Betty (Sparks) Mai. Dave passed away Thursday April 23, 2009 at the Midland Care Connection facility in Topeka, KS at the age of 56.

As a child, Dave attended the WaKeeney Grade School and graduated from Trego Community High School in 1970. Upon graduation from high school, Dave chose to serve his country and entered the United States Army in January 1971 and served throughout Germany until 1973. Receiving an honorable discharge from the Army, Dave attended and graduated from Hutchinson Community College with an associates degree in Criminal Justice. Dave then worked as a driver’s license examiner for the State of Kansas and in 1979 realized his childhood dream being accepted into the patrol academy in Salina for the Kansas Highway Patrol. His 23 year tenure with the patrol started with his first assignment as trooper in Goodland, KS and later to the Kansas Turnpike Authority stationed in Lawrence, KS where he became Master Trooper. Upon retirement from the patrol, he worked as a security officer for Honeywell Corporation in Lawrence and Kansas City.

I was sad to learn that Dave had died but have some good memories of having worked with him when I was a Deputy. One time was a morning I was beginning to wonder about my own sanity. I was on patrol and was going west on 8th to Hwy 27. Looking to the west I could see the Rocky Mountains, which appeared to be somewhere near Burlington, Co. I was stopped and looking at the wonder of seeing the Rockies when Dave called me on the radio and asked if I was seeing anything odd to the west. He was also on patrol we were both glad to know someone else was seeing mountains! It only lasted a few minutes but was a pretty amazing mirage to see.

If anyone else has any memories they would like to share about Dave you could use the KHP link in the forum. Just use the button at the top of this page then click on the KHP link.
