Deb and Cynthia recently attended classes in Hays to complete their training to become certified EMDs. Congratulations to both!

In the near future dispatch will be upgraded with new radio consoles and other new equipment. Something new to learn to use but it should be worth it. Having the newer equipment should help make dispatching easier for all.

The Dispatch area has also been getting spiffed up with new paint on the walls, new file/storage cabinet, and new lockers. It is looking much better plus it is nice that each person now have their own locker!

We are now running with full staff again with Deborah Farland filling the last open slot. Deb has had a lot of Law Enforcement experience, she was a Police Officer in Colorado and most recently St Francis Police Chief. Plus in between was a Court Service Officer. We are glad to have Deb join us in Dispatch.

The most recent training that has been taken was last week when Barb and Darcy had their TAC updating. Also Barb and Deb took more training with the Open Fox dispatch system. Bad Weather training will be held in mid October to prepare for road closings due to winter weather conditions.

Dispatch now has a backup paging encoder system contained in a console suitcase unit. They have been tested and ready for use. Now we all have to be instructed on how to use them. One major usage of this system would be in case dispatch ever had to leave the regular dispatch center due to some emergency. The portable system can be set up elsewhere and keep communications with patrol officers going.

Crissy attended an interoperable communications meeting a few days ago. There she learned how the state is getting ready to install something called a MOTOBRIDGE on each of the KDOT towers. The eastern 1/2 of the state already has them. It allows VHF, UHF, and 800mhz radio user to interface with someone of a different radio type. There are tactical channels assigned already that will be used in the event that they need to be bridged together. They have also established several interoperable channels to be used when mutual aid is occurring so that we don't have another Greensburg. Not that these things will prevent a tornado but after they are in operation it may make communications easier in an emergency. All radios are to be programmed with these channels so that they ready and waiting for the next 'Big One'.

Dispatch will now have a new backup paging encoder system contained in a console suitcase unit. They have been tested and ready for use. Now we all have to be instructed on how to use them. I may post more on this whenever I know more about the system.

With our 2 newbies, Cynthia has been on her own for a few weeks now and doing well. The other found out the job wasn't what she wanted to do and left during her probation period. That leaves one opening if anyone reading this is interested in the job please contact Crissy.

I recently found some pictures that were taken last summer at the 2007 Fair Parade. They cover some of the departments we dispatch. They were taken before the parade started and include RFD, GPD, EMS and S.O. Rather than trying to divide them between the different departments I decided to post them as a Slideshow for Dispatch. They were taken by Julie a previous dispatcher and given to me then. Thanks Julie and I apologize for overlooking them until now.

At this time we have 2 new Dispatchers in training so you will be hearing some new voices. Welcome to Amber Bagley and Cynthia Chaffin. They have joined the department to replace John and Julie. Julie has moved to Salina and plans on being a dispatcher for the Salina PD. John went back to the Denver area taking a job as a computer tech for phone services. We wish them well in their new adventures.

Being a bit shorthanded has made for some extra hours for the rest of us but we are managing okay. We have even been getting some extra training done such as everyone being current in CPR. Darcy and Bonnie both took the test to keep their EMD Certification current.

This was the first year I ever attended one of the yearly Pipeline Classes given and was surprised it was an interesting class. It is surprising how many different pipelines run through this general area. I'll be sure to call before I ever dig anywhere again! I had been aware of there being pipelines but I did not know how many different chemicals use pipelines to transfer the products. Everyone should attend at least one of these classes at some time.

Any day now we are suppose to be changing our State System for NCIC and everything else we run to a new system called Open Fox. I try to keep all entries on this website positive but it is hard to do with this change. Even the KBI instructor when giving our training said it feels like we are making 3 steps backwards. But there was a committee somewhere that decided this was the way to go. In time we may grow to like it but that isn't looking good right now. There have been a lot of glitches with the ones that have already changed over to the new system. I'm really glad Crissy decided we would wait until the last possible momment before changing over. The state may extended the time before forcing a change until more of the bugs get worked out. Well, I will quit complaining about this topic........on this page anyway. LOL I just hope everyone has patience with us when we make the change over because I think it is going to slow response time.

Crissy has also put together a training class this week end for more advancement in the National Incident Management System, known as NIMS. It is training in how to handle major incidents where you will be working with neighboring departments etc. Hopefully we never have to use it but one never knows what tomorrow may bring. 2 of our dispatchers John and Darcy have been attending this class.

Now for a sad note Julie has decided to leave because she is moving to Salina. She is looking forward to the change but will be missed by the rest of us.

At the time of this posting none of my co workers have given me any ideas on what they would like to see on this page so this update will be brief. The Dispatch Center now have new computer Weather Monitors for each dispatch station. This is suppose to help during any bad weather times. No training has been given as of yet so I can not report on how this is helping us. All dispatchers are taking training on the new state computer system that will soon be going in to effect. Hopefully this will make things easier but during the switching there will probably be the normal growing pains and glitches in running programs. I hope all departments will be patient if we have problems :)

Dispatchers and Director
Julia--Darcy--Crissy--Barb

The above picture was taken at the Training Session the RFD and EMS held on 07-16-07. Also attending was Bonnie but she was not shown in this picture. Central Dispatch had been invited to attend and it was interesting seeing the equipment used in cutting people from vehicles. It made for a very good training class for all involved.

Another recent training class that most attended was put on through SHCO and was for all county departments to learn about Violence in the Work Place. At first being involved with Law Enforcement one could think this was going to be a silly class because violence can be part of the work day. But this was totally different and showed different things to be aware of in case a co worker or someone involved with co workers may have problems that could become violent.

Due to having some phone failures in the recent past, the dispatch center will now be having 2 active phone lines from AT&T besides the S&T lines. The Dispatch center needs to have active phones at all times so people can contact us when they need help.

Midnight dispatchers now have to listen for failure alarms to the city lift stations plus anyone calling in with electrical power failures. This is a new plan the City is using to save them having to pay someone to work midnights at the Power Plant. To begin with this is a trial period to see how it will work. If there is a problem anywhere with the electric we have to call out someone from the city to take care of it.

We welcomed back Crissy almost 2 weeks ago after her time off with new baby. I believe she has been busy playing catch up on the things that were waiting for her. We had a department meeting May 3rd to cover the various things we all needed to know about dispatching etc. The CAD system was updated this week and we gained a couple of things we had wanted included with this update. We now have a Wrecker Rotation included in the CAD again. We had lost that when this system was first installed, making us do it by hand in record books. This way it is much easier to use and keep track of things. Plus we now have an easier way to get to our rolodex files. Neither may seem like a lot to anyone else but both a real help for dispatchers.

The severe weather storms we had in March and April kept dispatch busy with all the tornados in the area. It was discovered that a change was needed in the way the Tornado Siren was turned on in Kanorado. Crissy meet with the KFD and they have worked out a new system to cover the situation.

Congratulations to Crissy and Jake Congers with having the birth of their baby girl, Kya Jordyn on Feb. 25th. Crissy is now off work on maternity leave so she can enjoy the new baby. Not that she is completely away from running the Dispatch Center, she still has some issues she has to deal with. But for the most part we hope she is recuperating and bonding with the baby until she returns back to work fulltime.

Darcy has been picking up the extra and taking over in all she can for Crissy. Darcy has had a full plate to handle because there is always something extra that has to be handled in the Dispatch Center. Equipment glitches seem to occur regulary with the phones, 911 system, or CAD. Plus we have had the changes for the way Fire and Rescue calls are handled and Darcy has had to attend all the various meetings etc. I had to have surgery and needed more time off than I originally thought so she had to get my shifts covered. All of that plus different classes we have been taking and Darcy has been doing a really good job of filling in for Crissy. That is the reason I have given Darcy the current Atta Girl Award.

Darcy, Julia, and Bonnie took the classes and passed the exam to become Ham Radio Operators. We did it mainly because we may be getting a Ham Radio in to the dispatch center in case of any dissaster where other means of communication may be lost. In the hard hit areas of Katrina, Ham Radios were the only communication some had. John, Julia, Darcy, and Bonnie also attended the annual Storm Spotters Training class given by the weather service. Barb had been to Salina recently taking other training classes so we all have been busy trying to stay on top of things. Plus we all had to get our CPR training renewed in Feb. and thanks to Steve Evert from the EMS we all made it through the class.

Kansas Ave after the First Snow Storm in Dec 2006
Julie Took This Picture On Kansas Ave Dec. 2006

The recent snow storms have kept dispatchers busy. There are different things that dispatchers have to consider during blizzards and road closures. The area motels have to be called to keep track of how many rooms are open for travelers to use. When the rooms get down to a certain amount KDOT will then be notified and they will close I-70 at the next town that has motels. This usually means westbound traffic but it could work the other direction also. As most know there are times when the roads are okay here but things are so bad in Colorado that the Interstate and other highways get closed to stop people from becoming stranded in Co.

Lately the snow was bad enough here to close I-70 and other highways. At least we had enough time to close things to prevent having stranded motorist. No shelters had to be opened or things like that. Judy McKee, assist Emergency Management helped dispatch a lot by handling the bulk of calls to get hospital and other emergency workers to and from their jobs. There were several volunteers using snowmobiles and 4 wheel drives helping to transport people.

Then of course there seems to be more accidents in bad weather to help make things interesting for all involved. All the road/street departments worked extra hard trying to get streets and highways usable. One thing for sure I am ready for it to warm up and melt off all the snow. To view some snow pictures that Julie took after the first snow storm go to the Dispatch Slideshows.

I have been working on updates for all the pages but have decided to let this one run until the next set of updates. Mainly because it hasn't been that long since I updated this page and right now there isn't much new to report. So until then I wish Everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas. The next updates will probably be after the New Year......Bonnie

Dispatchers During 2006 Fair Parade*Dispatchers During 2006 Fair Parade

Two Pictures of Dispatchers Taken During the 2006 Fair Parade

All seems to be well right now with this department and I believe everyone is up to date on all our training requirements. All dispatchers had to retest/upgrade on some FEMA items. With all the new security being put in to practice since 9-11 we all have to be aware and trained on how to handle major events. There are things that will be handled in a different manner should we ever have an event that would need to use departments from other counties/areas. For instance we would not be using the normal 10-code system but use more plain language. The different departments would go under different titles depending upon where they would be located.

Barb was able to have a nice vacation this year......whenever you see her ask her about her Moose! PS: I'm still waiting for my steak! Julie had a few extra days off this month but was not having much fun, considering she had to have some surgery. Glad she is back and feeling better. Darcy has been staying busy with her normal dispatching plus she does a lot of the extra paperwork involved with keeping NCIC records up to date. Crissy was back to dispatching a few days while Barb and Julie were both gone. That gave her a break from all the work she has to do being the head of the department or she did a good juggling both jobs. I had to get fingerprinted for a license and was one of the first to get printed with the new scanner the S.O. now has. It ought to make things easier once everyone gets used to using it. John doesn't want me to say anything about him so I won't.

There is now a new 2006 Dispatch Center Slideshow showing some of the new equipment we now use. The other 2 slideshows are from 2-3 years ago and may take a little longer to load before viewing.

A Dispatcher's Prayer

06-18-06
Things have been running smoothly for Central Dispatch the past few months. We are still having our issues with the new CAD system and waiting on updates but so are the GPD and S.O. That and the few glitches in the phone system, which makes me very glad to work midnights. I do not have to work around repairmen while they are working on the phone system. I do not think any of the little glitches have ever caused any problems in handling calls. Other than maybe like me occassionally losing a caller when trying to transfer their call to someone else. That may be more me than the system :).

I want to thank all my co workers for filling in and working my shifts when I got sick and spent some time in the hospital and at home recuperating. Barb may have had the worse of that, she just got on her own and then sent to midnights to fill in for me. I know how much she loves working the graveyard shift! But again thanks to all that helped while I was gone.

We can tell it has become the summer months because it has become busier with the various calls. More people out and about when it is nice. Plus just a couple of days ago the tornado warning and the problems with downed trees etc. It looked pretty bad there for awhile, just glad it didn't get any worse. Crissy and Darcy had their hands full for during the storm. People have no idea what all a dispatcher has to deal with during something like that. Just like when we had the heavy rains a few weeks ago. Julie went back in to help Barb work through that storm.

I have been doing some work on the Previous Update pages by removing the Photo Shows and making different pages for them. The Previous Updates were beginning to take to long to load with the Photo Shows on them. I'm not sure how many look at the Archived/Previous Updates but want it all to work as best as I can make it. A Dispatcher's Prayer

The dispatchers are still in the process of learning the new CAD system. It has a lot of good points and the more we learn the easier it is to use. Though at times it can be flustrating trying to figure out what went wrong when something isn't working like you expect. The biggest headache has been the phone system and getting it to work with all the features we need. Computers are wonderful when they work but let them have a glitch or two and it can take the tecs some time to trace down the problem. I'm glad Crissy has the patience to keep working with the various tecs in getting things fixed.

Welcome to our newest dispatcher, Barb Disney, she decided to make a change and left her position as a Detention Deputy to join Central Dispatch. Barb was a dispatcher when she lived in Wyoming so she has the experience, just needs to get familarized with the system we have to use. We are glad she made the change and has joined us.

The department now has 3 EMD's with Bonnie's recent renewal and Darcy and John having taken the class to become certified EMDs. It's not something we use every day but nice to know when it may be needed. Crissy hadn't really wanted to be in charge of Emergency Management. Yet it seems she is getting a lot of it anyway with working with EM Gary Rogers. It is a new area for them and they are working together to get the system up and running for all of us. They have had several meetings locally and in other counties working on Emergency Management.

I don't want to forget Julie, she has been working for a few months now and is doing a good job. I think we have a good crew right now and hope it stays this way. It is nice working and not be short handed!

It has been about 2 years since I have posted any updates to this page. Several things have changed in that time yet it is still the same. There have been co-workers that have come and gone plus Mary our past Director has taken a new job in Hutchison. Ks. We wish her well and know she will enjoy being closer to her daughter and grandkids.

Crissy Conger has taken the position of Director of Communications. I'm glad the commissioners hired from within the department. It was a bit unsettling for awhile wondering who they were going to hire. I'm glad Crissy from our department wanted the job and I hope she likes the added headaches. :) I wouldn't have wanted the extra to deal with. I like my midnight shift and having some free time.

Our newest co-worker is Julie Crotinger and she is going to be good at this job. Not everyone can handle the things that a dispatcher has to do. We have had a few go through all their training then quit the day before they are to go on their own. So we are really glad to have someone that isn't afraid and will be on their own in the near future. The rest of us or at least I am tired of the OT and being shorthanded.

John had worked here before and came back knowing what he was getting in to......except maybe not realizing what a pain some of us are to deal with. haha

Darcy Frazier is new also since I last updated this page, but she has been with us now for over a year. She will soon be taking over the dayshift dispatch duties that Crissy was doing.

We have completely different systems to work with than what I last reported. The global tracker we had then for 911 calls never did work. We have one now that can track calls from area landlines but not from most cell phones. They say it depends on what system the cell phone has on how they can be tracked. So I'm not sure we gained much on that as of yet. Have to get the cell phone companies to upgrade etc.

Dec 1st we changed over to a new CAD system, so far so good in working it. It will just take some time in learning all the different things we can do with this system. The GPD and the SO are also on this same CAD system and shared on the cost etc. In the long run it should make all of our lives easier. It's just the learning how to use it to make it easier.

I suggest you read the Original Dispatch Page to learn more on what Central Dispatch does and what areas we cover. There are also a few Previous Updates that you can also read. I have the links shown in a different color or you can find both the original and previous updates by clicking on the Archive Link at the top of this page.

I wish everyone would understand better that Central Dispatch is their own Department. It confuses people because our Department is located in the City building yet we are a County Department. We get asked about our guys many times when the caller is referring to a GPD officer. Well they are our guys but so are the S.O. guys and the 4 Fire Dept guys and the EMS guys! (I actually mean guys and gals) We have to worry about all of them when they are on risky calls etc.

Bye for now....will update more later and Hope Everyone has a Merry Christmas.

By Now many of you have heard a new voice on the air....We have a new guy to join our team of dispatchers. Welcome to Herb Rempe-- He may be a new guy here but he comes with experience. He was a dispatcher with the KHP for 7 years, stationed in Wichita. He chose not to go to Salina when the KHP changed their system. But has now moved to Goodland and saw our Department was needing some help and has now joined up with us.

Carrie has been away, using her time off from Communications to have her baby. Baby Jacob Allen Phillips was born 06-12-03. Mother Carrie is doing fine but their was some problems with the little guy. He was transferred from Hays to a Wichita Hospital and now well on the way to being a healthy baby. Grandpa Dave said they are expected home this coming Thursday.

Later Carrie will return to work for a short time but she and her family are moving to Arizona, She will be missed.

Meantime Erica has returned to fulltime dispatching, it was nice having someone that knows what to do. She never fully left us anyway....would help out and fill in when needed. Welcome Back Kotter.....oops I mean Erica!

Richard is no longer with the Communications and we wish him well in whatever he decides to do.

Not many changes to report this month, Shelly and Brandon are back home with their baby boy. Glad to hear the baby is doing better.

Here are some pictures of an area Super Hero........Jason likes Law Enforcement one way or the other. He dispatches here part time plus works as a part time Detention Deputy at the S.O. Then also works part time at the Riley Co. Police Dept. in between going to college classes. Here he is in his Riley Co. uniform!

Now hopefully the following pictures don't scare anyone to much.....Lance was using his new camera to take some shots of the Dispatcher Center. Thought maybe someone would like to see what the Center looks like. Later I hope to post pictures of other dispatchers besides myself.

Photos have been removed so this page will load faster.

Our Communications is the first in Kansas to have Phrase 2 installed, where we can check the location of several 911 cell phone calls. It depends if the cell phone has the GPS (Global Positioning Satellite) chip. With the chip it will display on a screen the longitude and latitude of the call. We have another computer to enter these and it will show us the location by displaying an X. There are several things we have to do first to get the proper display. As of yet I have not received a call that has the chip. It will take awhile to learn this system and at a later date I may give my opinion of how well this works.

Shelly had a baby boy last week, she and baby are still in Denver doing well. Jason P is off for 2 weeks doing his yearly 2 week training with the Reserves. Lance is now filling in for Shelly and Jason. We aren't ever going to let Lance permanently leave dispatch!

I don't personally have a cell phone so haven't ever been one to accidentally make a 911 call. But as all dispatchers can tell you, we do receive alot of accidental calls. This can take up time trying to listen and to see if the call is being made by someone needing help. We do hear some strange or funny things during these accidental calls beings the person/s do not know the call has been made. Someone with a real emergency may have to wait on an answer while a dispatcher is trying to determine if the accidental call may be a real emergency. If you have a cell phone..... use the key lock function to prevent accidental calls. To listen to some butt calls (cell phones carried in pockets) Click Here.

Central Dispatch has been having several changes with employees lately. Long time dispatcher, Stacy had to take some medical time off to have her baby. Since then she has decided not to return to fulltime work. But then again she already has one fulltime job, taking care of her family. She has been working a few shifts to help out but won't be around here much longer. She and her family are making the move to Nebraska. She will be missed by all.

There are 2 new faces/voices that are now in training. So be watching/listening for Richard Johnson and Jason Peterson to be handling the calls. Along with them we have a familiar guy back, Lance has returned to work and help out until he can get himself moved to Garden City. Glad to have him back in the chair, not just because of work but as I earlier mentioned on the home page....He helps me with all my computer problems.(smile) Check out ONESHOT it is Lance's Website. Along with that Jason Showalter and Erica are still working in Dispatch part time whenever their other schedules allow it.

09-03-2002
Yesterday was the last shift Lance was scheduled to work for Dispatch----He is off to accomplish different things. As stated earlier he will be moving to Garden City. Good Luck Lance with whatever comes your way.

Bridgett will no longer be working as a part time dispatcher because she and her husband have moved to Montana. The commute would be to much for her to handle. Husband Tom had worked for the G.P.D. until he found a different job in Montana. We wish them both good luck in their new home town.

Shelly is now working as a fulltime dispatcher, taking over the slot Lance had been working. She no longer works at the prison but still makes alot of Ambulance runs with E.M.S. So even with all the coming and goings the Communications is still running with full staff.

Welcome back Erica Arntt.....She will be working part time again for the Dispatch Center. Shelly is now training to begin working as fulltime dispatcher in Sept. Lance will be leaving us then. He has decided he'de rather be with his wife in Garden City than staying in Goodland to work with us! His wife has accepted a nursing position at the Garden City Hospital and as much as he will be missed, I understand why he is leaving.

The Dispatch Center has 2 new Dispatchers in Training. Carrie Phillips will be working fulltime on the dayshift. She is the daughter of Goodland Police Corp., Dave Becker.

Jason Showwalter will be working partime throughout the summer as a Dispatcher and as a Jailer for the Sheriff's Dept. So actually between the 2 Departments he has a fulltime job. Jason is the son of Scott Showwalter the previous County Attorney. Jason will be returning to college in the Fall but plans to still work at the 2 departments whenever he has school breaks.

S.W. Bell has been working on the updates for the 911 Cell Phone Improvements. When they are finished we should be able to recieve addresses or locations from those making calls with a cellphone. Hopefully this will be a help and make the job easier!
