I have been waiting on information to add to this page but I haven't received any. We have a new Trooper, Perry Frey, that I want to say welcome to Sherman County.

Sorry as of now I have not received any information to add an update to this KHP Page.

The only thing other than the KHP normal work duties that I am aware of is the Child Car Seat Installing they did on 02-10-08. Maybe by the time of the next update I will be able to report more for the KHP because I know they stay busy with different training etc.

All I have to go by is our CAD records for this update. It showed several Service Rendereds plus some accidents worked but the thing that surprised me was all the animal calls. At first I thought maybe they had been logged under the wrong department. But in further checking it turned out to be things like dead deer on the highway, cattle out near I-70 etc. Then there were listings for the problem dog we would receive so many calls about near mm 16 on I-70. That dog caused more people to call in concerned about it or afraid it was going to cause an accident. I don't think anyone knows why it wanted to run around on the highway in that area. No one living near there claimed the dog. Different officers at different times tried to catch this dog but it would run away. Then get back on the highway after they left. Finally between the S.O., KHP, and Kansas Wildlife Officer there was a trap set and this dog was safely removed from that area.

Thanks to Crissy for giving me pictures of Trooper Joe Greene showing the Rollover Vehicle at the SHCO Fair. They can be viewed on the KHP Slideshow Page. I didn't see the Fair Demo but did see it one time at Flatlanders and it gives a good idea of what can happen when not wearing seatbelts. The time I watched there were also kids in the crowd watching. The dummy inside the vehicle was thrown out a window during the rolls when it wasn't using a seatbelt. A young boy in the crowd started yelling at his dad that he did not want to ride in that! The dad was having to explain what it was and that it wasn't a ride for people. I think it may have been branded in to that boys mind to wear his seatbelt from then on.

The CAD doesn't show a lot for KHP since the last update but that just means most all their activities went through their own dispatchers. Including the arrest of Rambo; 06-05-07 for theft of military vehicle, AWOL, and local theft of gas and 4-wheeler from an area farmer. Oviously this Rambo was nothing like the one Sly Stallone made famous in the movies. This Rambo decided he didn't like military life so left his outfit in Colorado taking one of the Army Vehicles and was heading east. He acted suspicious near Burlington Co. and KKC notified SHCO about the east bound subject. When he got in to SHCO more local reports came in about suspicious activity from the Ruleton area. GPD officers saw the vehicle come in to the Goodland area and followed it to Exit 17 and Trooper Huyn made the traffic stop with PD Officers Fenner and Gillespie. Officers make arrests all the time but this particular arrest made the news all over the country because it was Rambo. LOL

Some other CAD listings:
  • 05-11-07...ATL Stolen Hummer out of Colorado.
  • 06-12-07...Trooper Hodges Makes arrest at Coop on a GPD Warrant.
  • 07-02-07...Vehicle cited for speed after following to close to an ambulance at mm 15 after KKC Med Unit complaint
  • 07-09-07...Vehicle vs Deer accident on I-70 at mm 26
Trooper Joe Greene helped the Bethany College at Lindsborg, KS put on a CSI Camp from July 8th-12th. This is a camp for high school students and they learn about crime scenes, evidence collection, and all aspects of the Law Enforcement field. They learn the different duties and roles throughout the week and on the last night they are broken into teams and have to work a murder scene. During the crime scene the students are assigned roles and they have to perform those roles as L.E. Officers would. There is a Supervisor, Investigators, 1st Officer on scene, other officers, and evidence technicians. This is the second year of the camp and they had 30 students participate with 5 of those being returners from last year. It is a good time and a great learning experience for the kids. Trooper Greene is an Alum of the college and was asked to be one of the instructors.

Trooper Brian Wilson was transferred to Wamego, KS. This area may get another Trooper but not until the 2008 Jan. Class but they will probably be assigned to Thomas Co. Trooper Wilson will be missed and we wish him well in his new area.

The CAD system didn't show a lot of calls for the KHP but we do not log everything for them. It did show 3 non injury accidents and 1 injury accident since the last update. Plus a few reckless drivers that people reported on either I-70 or Hwy 27. On March 20, 2007 there was one report of a trucker falling asleep and waking up in a field. He had been West Bound I-70 near MM 16 when he drove off the roadway. Thanks to Deputy Parker I have added a few photos to the KHP Slideshow showing how lucky this driver had been, he went off just after passing under an overpass. He left a clear trail and was lucky not to hit anything. It is hard to see in the pictures but the Trooper was out in the field taking the report from the driver.

Troopers McQuitty and Huynh just completed a 40 hour course in Drug Interdiction. The course was taught at the KHP Academy and was taught by Troopers Rich '121' Jimerson and Doug '315' Rule. I'm told they are the top drug interdiction specialists in the state.

In trying to improve on this website I have moved pictures taken of an overpass accident near Hays, Ks from their previous location and added them to the KHP Slideshow. A trucker with an oversized load didn't make it traveling under the overpass. If you haven't seen these pictures before now you can check them out.

The Kansas Governor and Fema have cleared the way for oversized loads going to the dissater area of Greensburg, Ks to be able to travel during times normally not allowed such as night, Holidays, etc They still have to get permits although the fees will be waived and must follow other laws to drive. This should help get the equipment and supplies needed to the area effected by the tornado easier.

I checked our CAD system and found a few of the calls that KHP has taken care of since the last update. Not all calls that the KHP handle go through our CAD system because they have their own dispatchers etc. We do show there were 7 reports of non injury accidents and 1 injury accident all on I-70. There were 4 reports of reckless drivers on I-70 and 4 Miscellaneous calls. Also 3 different animal calls on the interstate, 4 assistance calls with helping other officers, 1 alarm call, and 1 theft report. So all in all the KHP stays busy doing several different things. So the ones that think KHP just writes speeding tickets don't know what really happens.

01-11-07
The KHP has been busy the past few weeks with all the snow, bad weather, and road closures which helped cause more I-70 accidents and slide offs. Trooper Greene has provider several photos from the area showing a lot of snow. To view all of them check out the KHP Slideshows. Thanks Joe for sending me all the pictures!

I have not received any new news from any of the local troopers to post so this update will be short and sweet. :)

All I know for sure is they have been busy with working traffic, making accident reports, and helping the S.O. and GPD whenver needed. I believe in the past few months some have also had to make reports of theft and assault coming from victims on I-70. That isn't something they normally do but every now and then, things happen and it can't be avoided. They also do Safety Seat installs for child restraints in vehicles. Plus other public service things that show different displays. Also I'm sure they were busy just before school started inspecting all the school buses.

Welcome to the areas newest trooper Eric Hodges, I think he has completed all of his training and now working fulltime to help keep the area safe.

Trooper Joe Greene had furnished me the following info over a month ago, I'm still playing catch up. Trooper McQuitty has completed F.T.O. Training and is working on his own now. June 1st is the next graduation date for the recruits at the academy. We will be getting a Trooper from that class, Eric Hodges K-521. When he gets out here I (K-194) will be training him and I will get some other info about him then and let you know.

I should soon be getting more info to post about Eric and updates on how this next part of his training is going. Also the KHP will soon have another new rookie Trooper starting her training. Leslie Knitig has received a conditional offer of a trooper position in Oberlin. She has finished her testing and now waiting for the final job offer. For those that do not know, Leslie has been the GPD's Animal Control Officer for the past few years.

If you would like to see one of our own KISS a Donkey, take your extra change and cash to one of the local banks-- 1st National, Western State, People's, or Bankwest and put it in Trooper Joe Greene's Jar. There is also a jar set up at the Cowboy Loop. This is a Fundraiser for Relay for Life. There are 5 people involved in this fundraiser and the one with the most money placed in their jars will win the prize of Kissing the Donkey! The Kiss will occur on stage at the Relay for Life Event later this month.

I have begun work on changing some of the Previous Update pages by removing large picture files and making them in to slideshows for the various departments. There is one for the KHP page from a Car Chase in 2003 that Trooper Hageman was involved with. This will now allow the Previous page to load faster for the ones trying to look at the archived articles.

KHP has more Troopers out in Sherman Co again, with the transfer of #305 Mihn Huynh from Garden City and #449 Josh McQuitty finished with his training. Welcome to the area and hope you enjoy working here.

KHP have recently been busy teaching about seat belt safety and child car seats. In case someone is not aware if you buy a new child car seat you can have KHP install it correctly for you. At various times during the year they feature a day for installing car seats or checking the ones you have installed for safety. Most recently it was held at Lonnie's Auto Body so they could work inside out of the cold. Thanks to Lonnies for allowing the use of your business.

If anyone has had to travel east to Hays within the past few weeks you know you have had a detour because of the damage to an overpass. This was caused by a semi driver with an oversized load trying to go where he should not have been. I know our area Troopers did not work this accident but have decided to post some pictures to show the kind of accident headaches a Trooper can have. It's just to bad one couldn't have found this driver and stopped him before he did all of this damage.

Picture has been moved to KHP Slide Show to allow this page to load faster.

This Update will be brief because I don't have a lot to work with as of yet. It has been 2 years since I last wrote any of these for this website. Check the Home Page Link at the top of this page to read more on the beginning of this site and why it was stopped for awhile.

Until I can start receiving better updates for this page I suggest you read the Original Page to learn more on what the KHP does and what areas they cover. There are also Previous Updates that you can also read. I have the links shown in a different color or you can find both the original and previous updates by clicking on the Archive Link at the top of this page.

The number of Troopers stationed in Sherman County is down right now because at least one transferred to a different location and one decided to quit. There are more in training and will soon be working and living in Sherman County. Now that I have started this website up again I will miss Trooper Hageman's help in keeping this page interesting. I hope one of the other guys will volunteer to send in news items for the KHP Page.

To help this page get better use the following link to send me ideas and information about the KHP training and activities. I will need at least one trooper's help with giving information for these updates.

The Troopers have been busy with all the normal Traffic Duties, Plus I know of at least once in the past week of a Trooper,K-313, getting called out in the middle of the night to help a stranded motorist.

I heard a rumor through the grapevine that pictures were taken at WalMarts when the KHP was doing checks on children's safety seats. Rumor said the pictures were going to be sent to me for posting to this page. But......as so many rumors go......No pictures as of yet. So if they are really out there, please email them and I will post them.

In the mean time here is one of the pictures taken at the scene of the pickup and horse trailer rollover near Exit 17 on I-70. Trooper Smith was the one getting to write this report.

K-313 working a rollover accident near Exit 17, I-70

Trooper Hageman has written the following article for this page. So this information is straight from someone who was there and involved.....No News Media to get the facts confused! Sounds to me everyone involved did their jobs well. Thanks K270 for helping improve this page again.

Bonnie,
Don't know whether you want to use any of the following info., but I would like to let you all know of a few things that occurred on April 1:

I observed a speeder on I-70 around m.p. 8. I made a traffic stop on the individual at exit 9. After I had made contact with the driver and returned to my patrol car, he took off and the chase was on. The subject exited I-70 at mp 12 and blew through the stop sign at approx. 80 mph. He immediately re-entered I-70 and continued eastbound. The subject did the same thing at exit 17, but not before passing a semi on the right shoulder. The suspect made a maneuver towards Undersheriff Butts' vehicle at exit 19. Butts was positioned in the south ditch. Butts was able to pull forward far enough to avoid getting hit in the door, but was still struck in the left rear. Butts' pickup was then shoved into a light pole, which came tumbling down. The pole struck the right front of Kevin's vehicle, and presented a new obstacle for me to quickly have to drive around. After striking Butts, the suspect's vehilce went into a counter-clockwise skid, causing it to roll. The vehicle rolled several times, and ejected the suspect. The suspect's vehicle and tag were stolen, the suspect had an active warrant, and the suspect did not have a driver's license.

Bonnie, there is a lot of compliments that need to go out here:

Dave Albers did a good job of getting set up with stop sticks at the bridge at mp 19, even though they were never used during this chase.

Kevin Butts, who is a friend as well as a co-worker, was there for me once again. Kevin is excellent about helping the KHP out, whenever he can, and this time was no exception. He did everything in his power to help stop this chase, and his quick thinking is what helped him and others from getting injured.

Dave Becker and Bob Juleson were a big help with traffic control, once the chase had ended.

City Fire Rescue did a good job at responding and eliminating the threat that the leaking gasoline (out of the suspect's rolled vehicle) was causing.

EMS responded quickly and tended to the needs of the suspect and made sure that everyone was okay.

Carrie Phillips did an outstanding job on the dispatching end of this chase. She monitored my traffic on the 800 and was able to relay it to her people, without delay or mistake. This is such a huge help, as our communications sometimes become difficult in the heated moment of a chase.

I was all alone during the chase, and when you are driving over 110 mph, chasing a fool on April fool's Day, and talking to Norton State the entire time; it is greatly appreciated when someone like Carrie can jump in there and let the local officer's know what the status of the chase is.

I can't say "Thank You" enough to all the people who helped out and were a part of this event. This job is never dull, and presents some hectic and exciting situations on a regular basis. I am proud to be part of a group of people who can work so well together. Bottom line, we do our job, and we did it well this time.......as if there was any doubt......The bad guy lost, nobody died, none of ours was injured and the most important thing 'We All Went Home At The End Of The Day'.

THANKS TO ALL
Rich Hageman

The following are some picture taken after the crash...Once Again Thanks to Justin Benzinger for sharing. These were taken from a distance so not alot of detail but they can give everyone an idea of what was happening.

Picture has been moved to KHP Photo Show to allow this page to load faster.

Sorry to say I don't have any new information at this time to report for the Troopers Page. I never even see a Trooper at least not while I'm working. Lately I haven't had much oppurtunity to even talk to one.....guess that is a good thing. Because when I usually talk to one means I've had to get one called out in the middle of the night! So I'm sure the guys don't like talking to me anyway. The call outs usually mean an accident has occurred on I-70 or 27 Hwy but occassionally the odd things do happen. For instance the night a few months ago K-270 responded to the report of a person just stopped in her car in the driving lane of I-70. Her reason....she was waiting on a miracle! I suppose she did get one because it was a small miracle that no one ran into her before K-270 was able to get her the help she really needed.

As far as talking to the Troopers I want to mention that I do appreciate it when I'm dispatching whenever they call into dispatch and let me know they are 10-8 or 10-7. I know we have the extra radio to monitor KHP radio traffic but it is still nice to have our own contact.

The following is a picture of K-313 Unit and sidekicks. I received this via PD Officer 304. If a car picture can be cute...I thought this one was, although K-313 may not have thought it cute removing pawprints.

Thanks Given to GPD Officer Brad Parker for Sharing this Photo

This Update was furnished by Trooper Hageman...Thanks for the input!
The new radio system is 800 Mhz. It is okay, but a little different. We have towers in many of the counties, throughout the state. It is a lot more clear, and we don't have any annoying skips anymore. Each tower is connected to Salina.....as was before on the low band. We hear the other troopers a lot farther away now. Anytime we go out of the area, we have to change our radio around to choose the proper tower. That is kind of a pain. Our old system was trunked, and took a lot of the guess work out of it. All in all, it is an improvement, however a lot of agencies are not monitoring 800, and therefore don't know what we are doing, or what is going on. The Sherman County troopers are all equiped with additional radios, that allow us to talk to you.(Central Dispatch) It covers all of the agencies in the area. Hope this helps......

The new trooper (Joe Greene K-194) is doing well. His wife, Mindy, is from Weskan. That is the biggest reason they moved out here, and he is from Longmont, CO. He can't get much closer to his home, and still be in Kansas.

Note:The KHP has furnished the SH CO Dispatch Center with a radio/monitor so dispatchers are able to monitor them. Under normal conditions dispatchers are not to use that radio. It is meant for monitoring only.

This site wants to give a warm welcome to our area's newest Trooper, Joe Greene K-194. Joe started his field training with Trooper Rich Hageman May 29th and will be working with Rich until sometime in August. Then I think he will have to return to the KHP Training Center in Salina for a few weeks before he will be working in his own unit. We all appreciate the additional help and looking forward to working with Trooper Greene.

June 24th,2002......Thanks to PD Officer Brad Parker for the following concerning Trooper Greene. Brad said Trooper Green started with Lindsborg PD in 1998, and eventually moved on to Salina PD before being accepted by the Highway Patrol. (Joe and I (Brad) went to college together, and used to work together as Resident Assistants in two different dorms. I (Brad) also went to school with his wife, Mindy.)
