Fire Rescue has been busy responding to many accident calls on I-70 and other locations within the county the past few weeks due to the winter snow storms. I counted at least 21 entries in the CAD System where they responded to the different accident calls. If there were any pictures taken during any of these calls, please someone send them to me for posting in a slideshow. I realize sometimes a firefighter is to busy to worry about pictures but occassionally someone is able to get some interesting pictures at the scene. I would like to post them if available.

The CAD shows the Rescue Unit responded to 2 accidents since the 10-20-06 Update.

The Fire Rescue and GFD had some recent training with the the EMS people. Other departments were invited to come watch. They practiced extraction. by putting a dummy in the car and cut the top off of the vehicle. Darcy from Dispatch was there, she WAS NOT the dummy...but they did put her on a gurny and loaded her into the ambulance.

Thanks to Stan Duell you can view pictures taken during this training, held at Mc B's at the Rescue SlideShow. The pictures show this was good training for all involved. One never knows when an accident will be bad enough to have to cut someone out of the wreckage. I had really intended to attend this session because I have never seen the jaws of life being used. But I ended up having to sleep some before working that night.

According to the Dispatch Cad system since 03-04-06 Fire Rescue has responded to 2 accident calls. One on 03-08-06 looking for a rollover on South 27 hwy near the Sherman/ Wallace line. The search spread out to other areas of the county when the wreck was not found on 27 hwy. There were several different departments helping in this search. The victim was eventually found by his father in Wallace Co on Mount Sunflower Road. The Sherman Co EMS responded to that location beings they had also been involved in the search.

The second call for the Rescue Unit was on 04-04-06 to an accident near Exit 19 on I-70. I'm not sure if the jaws were needed to remove the victim from his vehicle or not. There was a need to take care of some oil spill at the scene. This was a serious injury accident involving a pick up truck and being hit by a semi. Sadly the driver of the pick up did not survive, even after being flown out to a Denver Hospital. The Cad System also shows a training session for Fire-Rescue on 03-04-06 at Mc'B'S. I'm not sure but I think this may be the training with EMS, because the photos for the EMS training look like they may have been taken in that area. There will be a slideshow posted on the EMS page to view these photos. Plus they are included in a GFD Slideshow if you want to view them.

I should also mention that Scott Gilmer will soon be the fulltime Fire Chief for the GFD and Rescue Unit. He previously had been the Assistant Chief and currently acting Chief until someone was hired to replace Dean Jensen. I'm glad it went to a local person and welcome Scott to the job. I will post the new Assistant Chief as soon as I learn who it will be.

I do not have any incident to especially mention for the Rescue Unit but they have been called to different accidents since the last update. It is unknown to me if they have had to use the jaws in helping to rescue anyone in the past few months. But they are always there and ready to respond whenever needed.

One of the changes occurring is the process of the City hiring a new Fire Chief beings Chief Jensen has left the GFD. Scott Gilmer is now Acting Chief until someone becomes officially hired for the position. Until I have more to report I will add the following to this page as I did with the GFD page.

Troy asked me to do a bit more for fellow Firefighter Jeff White, to help everyone remember. I found this poem on the RescueHouse.com website. They have a lot of different articles and items dealing with firefighters.

Jeff didn't die in the line of duty but could have at some point. He is missed by his family, friends, and fellow firefighters. I hope this poem works in showing respect.

Jeff White
Ode to Firemen

All honor to the red-clad heroes;
the boys who ran the machine
Over the highway to rescue,
quick to danger's scene;

Where angry flames devour
the poor man's earthly store,
Bidding to all a defiance,
with its wild and sullen roar,

Tell me not of the gallants
who wear the helmets bright,
Who boast of their deeds
in some degrading fight;

But sound aloud the praises,
and give the victor-crown
To our noble-hearted Firemen,
who fear not danger's frown.

They of many a conflict,
with the haughty demon of flame,
With rising sun of the morning,
their gallant deeds proclaim.

The signal that strikes terror,
to them is known full well;
Forth to do and dare they spring
at the tap of the bell.

Some one's home is falling
in the midnight solemn hour;
Now the heroic legion spring forth
to show their power.

Listen to the rumble,
as they clatter over the way;
There's hope as they speed on
In determined and gallant array

Soon the fiery days will he over;
the machine will be of the past,
And over the forms of our heroes
the mantle of age will be cast,

As they tread to the portals,
and view the setting sun,
Then fall; arrayed in the glories
of the gallant deed they've done.

Honor! to such brave brothers;
let the shout sweep to the sky.
Weave garland thru the memory
as the ages swiftly fly,

Over each Fireman's grave
write with honor's pen:
Here lieth one who delighted
to aid his fellow men.

This Update will be brief because I don't have a lot to work with as of yet. It has been 2 years since I last wrote any of these for this website. Check the Home Page Link at the top of this page to read more on the beginning of this site and why it was stopped for awhile.

Until I can start receiving better updates for this page I suggest you read the Original Page to learn more on what the Resue does and what areas they cover. There are also a few Previous Updates that you can also read. I have the links shown in a different color or you can find both the original and previous updates by clicking on the Archive Link at the top of this page.

One Update that I can mention is a sad event, the lost of one of the Rescue Unit volunteers, Jeff White. Jeff had used a lot of his time in helping the Rescue Unit and GFD be as good as they are. Jeff you will be missed.

To help this page get better use the following link to send me ideas and information about the Rescue/Fire Departments training and activities. I will need the help of at least one firefighter to give information for these updates.

The Rescue Unit gets called out anytime there is a report of an injury accident or any accident when it is not known if there may be an injury. These guys go and help remove someone if they are trapped in a vehicle. Many times there isn't anyone trapped but they continue to help with anything needed at the accident scene.

One such incident involved a pickup and horse trailer rollover, the human passengers got out fine. It took awhile longer to get the horses out of the wrecked trailer.

I am not aware of any current training that the members of the the GFP/Rescue Unit may be taking. But I do know according to the procedure Dispatch is to follow they get called anytime we get a report of any incident involving any type of hazardous material.

Due to this and also with the Terrorist Threats we now face I am adding some links to sites that contain information everyone can use. Homeland Security has released a guide to help us all...Be Ready... To read it Click Here

To view The Citizen's Preparedness Guide Click Here

To view Helping Children Cope with Disasters Click Here

I hope none of us ever have to deal with any terrorist attacks or have to protect ourselves from nuclear fallout but by reading some of the information given in the above links may help us be prepared just in case.

At the current time I don't have anything new to add to this Rescue Page. Most if not all of the information given on the other Fire Department Pages would also relate to the men that work on the Rescue Unit. The Rescue Unit is just used alot for injury accidents but the same ones that volunteer with the GFD also run the Rescue Unit.

The following isn't exactly an update but I found it interesting and the Fire/Rescue Unit would be one of the first to deal with a nuclear waste accident...So I'm adding it to this page.
