I have started a new Slideshow Page for 2009 where you can view some pictures taken at the house fire that occurred 01/27/09 at 224 E 11th, Goodland. The RFD was called to assist the GPD. This was the house where the Flight for Life crew would sleep in between flights. The house was destroyed but thankfully no one was hurt.
The following is what I found in the CAD for calls the RFD have responded to since the last update.

Children Learning Fire Safety
The RFD has a new truck for their Fire Rescue calls involving accidents. They have had training with it plus other training sessions since the last update. At least one included a multi agency with GFD and Colby's FD doing house burns. They are also doing their annual School Safety Shows at the various schools and pre schools around Goodland. You can view pictures from different events by going to the 2008 RFD Slideshow. To view pictures from events prior to 2008 go to the Pre RFD 2008 Slideshow.

One of the Many CRP Grass Burns in Sherman Co this Year
This Spring many of the area farmers/ranchers had the extra requirement to burn off their CRP Grass. The RFD stood by on a few and were paged out on some that burned more than they were suppose to. Most burned without a problem but they all made extra work for the Fire Chiefs that had to approve the burn plans etc.
I have started a 2008 RFD Slideshow that has pictures of 1 CRP Burn and 1 Training session. The Previous RFD Slideshow Page was getting full so decided to begin another to make them easier to view.
The following are the CAD entries RFD has handled since the last Update.

There have been a few changes with the RFD Roster with Jake Conger changing from KFD to the RFD plus adding Bret McQuitty and John Studer. Then we all had to say good bye to Stan Duell who decided to move to Salina. Everyone hated to see him leave and not just because of all the years he had been working as a Firefighter in Goodland and Sherman Co. We all wish him well in his new adventures. Sherman Co's loss will be Salina's gain.
It seems there has been a lot written in the paper lately about trying to merge all the area Fire Departments under one Chief. I'm not sure how all of that is going but I'm sure some day it will all be worked out. Until then the RFD Chief, Alan David, will be handling the reports for RFD, KFD, and the BFD. It seems the state is requiring more and more reports, making it harder for small departments to handle everything with volunteers.
I haven't been given any information to report about training or other activities the RFD may have been involved with since the last Update. There isn't any new pictures added to the slideshow but you can view previous ones at RFD Picture SlideShows. The following is the information I found in the CAD about calls the RFD handled since the last update.

The bad weather related road conditions the past few months helped keep the RFD busy making several Jaws of Life runs. Some turned out to be slide offs without any injuries or complications. When people passing by call in accidents they often do not know if there are injuries etc. They just know have cell phone must call because they saw what looked like an accident to them. To be on the safe side the RFD gets paged to anything that may be an accident outside of Goodland.
The last pictures I received were from the Jaws of Life Training on 12-01-07. They can be viewed on the RFD Slideshows As soon as I receive more photos I will post them.
The county is debating about hiring a Fire Chief to handle all the paperwork for the 3 Fire Departments in the County. They have also been meeting with the City Officials talking about merging different departments. Whenever I find out any other information, I will post it to this page.
The following I pulled from the CAD showing other calls and events the RFD was involved with since the last update.

This is a short update to post 2 new RFD Slideshows with pictures from the Jet Crash at Renner Field on 10-17-07. Also a Jaws of Life Training 12-01-07 given by Larry Anderson, Hurst Rescue Tools International Trainer . I will be back in January to post a full size update.

Big Sister Allison---Loren---Baby Trent
FireFighter Loren Shelton's son Trent Edward was born 10-2-07 at 2:50 a.m., weighing 5 lb 12 oz and 19 inches long. Congratulations to the proud family. More photos of Trent can be viewed on the RFD Slideshow Page.
RFD has been taking their new Fire Safety Trailer to the Schools, Child Care Centers, and other area events showing the kids how to be safer during fires. I took a tour of the trailer during Flatlanders and was a bit surprised seeing how it was scaled to size for kids. The pictures I have posted to this site gives the impression of full size rooms. This Trailer is a great asset for our area and the training the kids get by being shown how to act during fires at home. Over 2000 people have taken the tour of the Safety Trailer since the RFD has had it. The Trailer has training in storms, fireplaces, kitchen emergencies, fire alarms- 'houses and public buildings', doors that warm up to show how a door would feel if a fire was on the other side, simulated smoke, telephone for 911 training and a escape ladder from a second story. The North School visit pictures have been posted on the RFD Slideshow Page.
In August the SHCO Fire Rescue was awarded a fire prevention grant totaling $2,800 from FM Global, a leading property insurer of the world's largest businesses based in Johnston, R.I. The award will be used to purchase smoke alarms and educational material to improve fire prevention practices and awareness in the community.

RFD has been a bit busier than usual with taking care of Jaws of Life runs for accidents and Hazmat calls for spillage of chemicals. In checking the CAD since the last update the RFD had 6 Rescue Runs (Jaws), 1 Hazmat call, 1 Vehicle Fire, 2 Grass Fires, 1 Standby at the Fairground for the races, and 1 call where someone was smelling burning rubber. It was found someone cleaning wire by burning it off in a barrel.
There have been 2 training sessions with one having the Boy Scouts involved to work on a Safety Badge. Asst Chief Chris Bauman gave that class concerning gas fires due to his experience working at the Gas Co. The other training class covered learning how to use the Tools for the Jaws of Life. Thanks to Alex West for providing all the vehicles for the firefighters to cut up during this training. You can view pictures from these training sessions at the RFD Slideshow plus I have added more photos to the First Jaws Run Show. Thanks to Firefighter Cary Amos for providing the additional Jaws pictures plus the 2 training session pictures.

The have been some changes in the RFD due to the happenings with the GFD. The Volunteer Roster has changed, Justin Bentzinger had resigned before the changes due to not being able to give the time because he is working out of the area. Good luck to Justin and Welcome to the newest Rural Firefighters---Chris Dorn and the previous GFD firefighters David Avila, Troy Mannis, Kenny Studer, and Stan Duell.
RFD will now handle Fire/Rescue calls out of the Goodland City Limits as well as all Hazmat Calls. So it seems to me this department now has a much larger load to handle. Everyone should be greatful they are able to stand up and take over the extra work. There has been training on how to operate all the new Rescue equipment plus time spent getting the equipment organized on the truck to use. The training was put to the test by the very first Rescue call the RFD received. They had to use the jaws of life to remove the driver from his vehicle. Thanks to Roger Studer I received a few photos of this incident and they can be viewed on the RFD Slideshow Page.

One point of interest about the 12-22-06 fire was it being reported by the previous RFD Chief,
Ken Griffith. Shows once a firefighter always a firefighter, at least in seeing the problem and
getting it reported. I happened to be the dispatcher on duty that night and Ken was working for
the county in cleaning roads of snow when he saw the fire and reported it. I actually had the
RFD paged out and in route to the scene before the owners of the building called for help. Lucky
no one or any animals were hurt in this fire.
Welcome to 3 Firefighters, Quigg McCombs and Rich Miller who are returning to service and
newcomer Frankie Hayes.

RFD Firefighters Teaching Children Fire Safety
The RFD was busy during October celebrating Fire Safety month by giving several demos at the area schools and pre schools plus one day at WalMarts. There are more pictures with the kids on the RFD Slideshow Page for your viewing. The past 2 months had been a bit slower in having fires to fight. According to the CAD System there was a Vehicle Fire on 10-03-06 and a grassfire on 11-07-06 that the RFD reponded to. The RFD also was involved with a Parade on Oct ,5th....I'm not sure what that was but maybe Homecoming for the High School.
Two firefighters have returned to work with the RFD....Welcome back to Roger Studer and Bill Fulcher. Chris Bauman has become the assistant Fire Chief, congradulations, Chris, on this promotion. They can still use more Volunteers to help with the RFD. If you are interested in joining/volunteering you can find an On Line Application Here. Print it off, fill it out and either mail it to Chief David or turn it in at the Court House. The mailing address is on the application. There have been some changes within the RFD since the last Update. Kenny decided to retire from the duty of being the Fire Chief. Alan David has now taken that position. They are still looking for more Volunteers to help with the various fires. If you are interested in joining/volunteering you can find an On Line Application Here. Print it off, fill it out and either mail it to Chief David or Fax. The address and Fax number is on the application. If you have further questions about the RFD you can email Firefighter Lt. Justin Benzinger at---
July 26th, 2006 the RFD had a major fire to handle at Richard Townsend's Farm. Before it was all taken care of the KFD and GFD both sent units and firefighters to help. Thanks to Deputy Parker I have pictures to add to the RFD Slideshow of this fire.

Picture Provided by Cary Amos
The RFD has a new truck to help them fight the various fires in the county. At the time of this writting I do not think they have had to use it in a fire fight. RFD did have a Training Session on April 3rd, 2006, unknown to me what this session covered but maybe on learning the new things that go with this truck.
Since the last update the total Burn Ban has been lifted, our snow helped in that matter. The Dispatch Cad system shows the RFD had 3 grass fires and one vehicle fire since the last update. The 3 grass fires were located in the areas of 1735 Road 54, 2222 Road 77, and the jct of Roads 58/25. The following 2 pictures were taken of the vehicle fire at the Century Feedlot. The pictures were provided by Deputy Brad Parker, who had also reponded to this fire call. The pictures are from a distance so it is hard to tell which vehicle was on fire but the situation was taken care of.

I do not have any real updates to post for the RFD this go round. The only thing I know is Chief Griffith had a
burn ban activated by the County Commissioners for Sherman Co. The ban went in to effect yesterday 03/06/06 and will continue until we get out of this dry spell. Other than that I can only state there have been some firefighter changes, some have left and some have joined the RFD. An update Firefighter list is posted further down on this page.
12-09-05
This Update will be brief because I don't have a lot to work with as of yet. It has been 2 years since I last wrote any of these for this website. Check the Home Page Link at the top of this page to read more on the beginning of this site and why it was stopped for awhile.
The RFD had been the one department that gave me a lot of information before and I hope it will continue again.
To check on the list of current volunteers of the RFD please check out the Original Page, it can be found in the Archives at the top of this Page. The one new firefighter is Leslie Knitig, the first female to have joined the force. Leslie is also the Animal Control Officer for Goodland. The Original Page should also be read by first time visitors to gain some information on the RFD and the area they cover.
To view all the Previous Updates for the RFD and other departments you can use the Archive Link at the top of the page.

The RFD has been busy with continuing training classes. You can view pictures from the
March Search and Rescue Class by
Clicking
Here. There is now a total of 4 Slideshows and 1 FlipBook to view the different Training
Classes.
These Pictures were taken when the RFD was called a few weeks ago to put out a fire that had
started in the grain dust dumped at the Landfill. Give them time to load, there is more than
one picture.
Thanks to Justin for sending me all the pictures to post for this update.
Pictures have been moved to the RFD Slideshow Page and Listed as Grain Dust Fire.
I believe members of the RFD were also out helping to
look for the Plane Crash that occurred recently in the Northern part of Sherman Co. To view some pictures
from that Crash Site please go to the
Sheriff Dept. Plane Photo Show.

First time visitors or anyone who hasn't read the original page listing the area that our Rural
Fire Department covers....Please check it out through the Archive link located at the top of
this page.
NOW WHAT ARE THESE 2 FIREFIGHTERS DOING???
The RFD is still working hard on their training, there is another Slideshow that covers the
Grease-Fuel Fire training given on 01-20-03. Training covered a modern grease fire using vegetable oil
from a deep fat fryer that burns at very high temperatures. Each fire fighter had the opportunity to
extinguish it with a K type potassium based unit. Then a large fuel fire was lite in a training pan and
each fire fighter extinguished it with multiple types of units. To view Slideshow
Thanks given to Rod Cooper of Crazy R's for Donating and Heating the Cooking Oil for this training.
Also Thanks to Med Enterprises for donating dry powder fire extinguishers.

The Rural Fire was called to assist Brewster Fire with a major fire at the Stuckeys located near
the Brewster Exit off of I-70 during the Thanksgiving Holidays. I haven't been by there since the
fire but I have seen some newspaper pictures showing it burned to the ground. Rumor has it that
at least one Rural Firefighter was able to take some pictures while Stuckeys was burning. If the
photographer wants to share, I'd post some to the update pages on this site.
Justin Bentzinger sent me some more pictures from the recent Ladder Training session that the
RFD had. These have been posted to a slideshow, you can view this slideshow plus the
1st of the Responding Training Session held a few months ago. Click Here to view the slideshows.
I bet not many people realize the time that is involved with improving the department with this
training. This will continue for nearly a year before these particular classes are completed.
Salute to you all for caring enough to do this! I really appreciate all the information,
pictures, etc that Justin has been sending me to have posted to the RFD pages. It helps to keep
things more interesting and if anyone else wants to share
things for this page please Contact me by Clicking Here
with the information.

The Rural Fire Department has been working on Firefighter One Certification.
On August 19th they had one of their classes/drills working towards this Goal.
Fire Fighter Justin Bentzinger explains this particular class as....The 19th August 2002 class
was a competition. A two man team was required to drive their assigned apparatus one half mile,
get out, draft/suck water out of the portable tank and then pressurize it to over 100 PSI and
spray it out of a 1 and a half inch hose. The winning team did all of this in 2 minutes 11
seconds,it was Truck 2 with Assistant Chief Alan David and Firefighter Quigg McCombs.
You can view a Slideshow of the pictures taken at this training session
by Clicking Here.

Rural Fire has started a new Training Program to help improve their service to the County. I apologize
that at the time of this writting I do not know what this training is called. Firefighter Amos had
mentioned this additional training but I do not have all the details. When completed this training
will upgrade the department. Thanks to all the volunteers willing to take the time to get this
extra training. When I have further information I will post it to this Update Page.
Firefighter Amos has given me some pictures to post to the Rural Fire Updates. This one is just
a reminder for EVERYONE to be careful during this hot dry season....Hopefully there will not be
any grass fires like this one taken last year on the Tompkins land.

The following 2 Pictures are being posted because they are interesting of another departments
truck. Firefighter Amos took these while the West Virgina truck was parked in Goodland. The
department had been to the 2002 Olympics in Utah. This truck had some Beautiful pictures painted
on it and hopefully they show up clear in this posting. Thanks Cary for the pictures!
